Hydroponics is quite simply a technique of growing plants without the use of soil. Plants may be grown in a variety of inert media (something not containing nutrient) such as rockwool, clay pebbles, coco fibre etc and provided with nutrients in a nutrient solution or feed, in fact the plants can be grown in the nutrient solution alone as long as it contains enough oxygen.
The nutrient solution must provide all the mineral elements that the plant requires. A quality hydroponic nutrient such as from CANNA ® will provide all that the plant requires, normal plant feeds may not be sufficient for hydroponic growing as they are normally formulated to take into account certain nutrients that the soil may already contain.
The fact that the plant is given a feed solution with all the nutrients in it means the plant doesn't have to expend vast amounts of energy growing a large root system and it can expend this energy on growth above ground producing useful leaves, fruit and flowers.
There are many advantages to growing plants hydroponically:
larger yields, tastier produce and faster growth being amongst them. Growing hydroponically is also a lot cleaner than soil growing and the plants are more disease resistant, with less chance of being attacked by pests than in soil.
Growing hydroponically may be as simple or as technical as you want to make it.
